Review Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO
The Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is a lens I’ve used extensively over the past few months in a wide range of conditions. This review is based entirely on real-world use. No sponsorships—I buy all my own gear. I’ve broken this review down into four main parts: build quality, handling, optical performance, and autofocus. I’ll wrap up with my final verdict.
🔧 Build Quality – ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5/5)
As part of Olympus’s PRO line, this lens is built to the highest standards—and it feels that way right out of the box. It’s solid, well-balanced, and beautifully engineered. The zoom and focus rings are wide and buttery smooth. The manual focus ring locks in place with satisfying hard stops—great for precision.
The weather sealing is exceptional. When zooming, you can literally feel air being pushed out due to the tight sealing. I’ve used this lens in heavy rain, snow, and even north of the Arctic Circle. Not once did it let me down.
The only weak point is the lens hood design. It’s well built, but the locking system isn’t great—if you press just one release button, it can come off easily. That’s risky when walking or shooting on the go.

🖐️ Handling – ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5/5)
This lens balances beautifully on my Olympus E-M1 Mark II and III bodies. On smaller bodies like the E-M5 Mark II or E-M10, it becomes a bit front-heavy. It’s still usable, but not as comfortable for long sessions.
With an effective focal range of 24–80mm (full-frame equivalent) and a constant f/2.8 aperture, this is a true all-purpose lens. Thanks to the in-body stabilization, you can shoot handheld in low light with lower ISO settings. For fast-moving subjects, you’ll still need a higher shutter speed—and here again, the f/2.8 helps a lot.
The lens features a customizable Fn button on the barrel, which you can assign to functions like focus mode or reset focus point. Combined with the E-M1’s custom buttons, it creates a fast and flexible shooting setup.
And like all Olympus PRO lenses, it has a manual focus clutch—pull the focus ring back and you’re in manual mode. I love this feature; it makes fine-tuning focus fast and intuitive.
📢 Pro tip: Always use your lens hood! It protects from both impact and lens flare. Forget UV filters—this is your best front-glass insurance.

🔍 Optical Performance – ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5/5)
This is high-end glass—and it shows. Even wide open at f/2.8, the center is tack sharp, and the corners are quite good. Stop it down to f/4 and sharpness stretches from edge to edge. The sweet spot for my copy is around f/5.6, where it delivers stunning clarity across the frame.
For landscapes, this lens is fantastic. At 40mm it produces lovely, creamy bokeh—maybe not full-frame level, but certainly attractive and useful.
Every sensor format has its purpose, and this lens maximizes what Micro Four Thirds can do. Honestly, I can’t say a single bad thing about the image quality.
➡️ Final rating: ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5 stars)
⚡ Autofocus & Close Focus – ☆☆☆☆☆ (5/5)
The autofocus is blazing fast and silent. Even on the older contrast-based E-M5 Mark II, it performs flawlessly. On the E-M1 Mark III—with its face and eye detection—it’s even better. It’s a dream setup for portraits and candid shots.
Close focusing is equally impressive. The lens can focus at 20cm from the sensor, which translates to 0.6x magnification. At 12mm, that means you can be just 7cm from your subject—great for semi-macro work and adding even more versatility to your kit.
➡️ Final rating: ☆☆☆☆☆ (5 stars)
✅ Conclusion – ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5/5)
What a lens. Olympus has created a truly versatile, professional-grade zoom that lives up to the PRO badge. If you’re stepping into the Micro Four Thirds world, I’d say this is the #1 lens to get.
Sure, it’s not cheap—but compared to full-frame alternatives from Nikon or Canon, it’s an incredible value. Some of those cost three times as much. Every system has strengths and trade-offs. Experienced photographers don’t waste time bashing formats—they learn how to exploit each system’s full potential.
And this lens? It’s the perfect gateway to unlocking the power of Micro Four Thirds. A solid performer, a true workhorse, and a lens that simply delivers.
➡️ Overall Score: ☆☆☆☆½ (4.5 stars)
A must-have for any serious MFT shooter.
